People Are Living Books We Must Read Wisely

A few days ago, I read something intriguing: People are like books. This thought struck me deeply, and I began to reflect — could this really be true? As I pondered, I realized that it is indeed an accurate analogy.

Just as not every book is good, not every person is good either. Books come in different categories: some are inspiring, some are mediocre, some are downright terrible, and others are simply ordinary. The same applies to people — there are good individuals, deceitful ones, toxic ones, and those who are just neutral.

The Deception of Appearances

Most of us choose books based on their title or cover. If a book has an appealing title and an attractive design, we assume it must be worth reading. But how often do we buy a book only to regret wasting not just our money but also our precious time? The same happens with people — we are often deceived by appearances. A charming personality, an elegant look, or a confident demeanor can mislead us into believing that someone is kind and trustworthy. But real character is only revealed when we truly get to know someone.

Many times, we judge too quickly. What appears impressive from a distance may turn out to be hollow up close. Just like not everything that shines is gold, not everyone who looks perfect is actually good at heart.

The Hidden Gems Among Us

Some books may seem plain and unappealing at first glance, but when we open them, we discover a world of wisdom, knowledge, and inspiration. Similarly, there are people who may not appear extraordinary on the surface, yet their depth, sincerity, and kindness make them truly special.

These people carry the weight of entire worlds within them. Their presence is fulfilling; their words bring comfort; their actions reflect their inner beauty. But do we notice them? Unfortunately, we often overlook such individuals in pursuit of superficial beauty.

The Danger of Superficial Attraction

We are naturally drawn to external beauty, often ignoring the essence within. We chase after those who look attractive but may not be beautiful in character. Just like a brightly colored snake may appear fascinating but carries deadly venom, some people seem captivating yet are toxic in nature.

True beauty is not in appearances but in the soul. A charming exterior with a poisonous heart is far more dangerous than a simple appearance with a pure heart.

The Lesson: Read Beyond the Cover

Look around — you will find living, breathing books everywhere. But instead of judging them by their covers, take the time to read and understand them. Choose wisely because the kind of “book” you pick will shape your journey.

As Allama Iqbal wisely said:

“Tujhe kitaab se mumkin nahin faraagh ke tu,

Kitaab-khwaan hai magar saahib-e-kitaab nahin.”

(You cannot be free from books, for you read them but do not truly understand them.)

So, let’s not just read people — let’s understand them.
