The day I realized AI isn’t just a tool
It started with something small.
I was helping someone draft an email, nothing complicated, just a polite, professional response. A few prompts, a few edits, and within seconds, it was done. Clean. Efficient. Better than what most people would write on their own.
For a moment, it felt like magic.
But then a thought crept in: Where did that “better” come from?
The phrasing, the tone, the structure, it all felt familiar. Not original in the romantic sense, but refined in a way that suggested it had seen thousands, maybe millions, of similar emails before. And that’s when it clicked.
This wasn’t just a tool helping me write.
It was a system built on other people’s writing.
The invisible crowd behind every answer
Once you notice it, you can’t unsee it.
Every AI-generated paragraph carries echoes of countless human voices: journalists, bloggers, academics, casual social media users. People who wrote something, somewhere, not expecting it to become part of a machine’s memory.
And yet, here we are.
We’re interacting with systems trained on a massive archive of human expression. Not just polished knowledge, but everyday language, opinions, stories, and cultural nuances. It’s all been absorbed, processed, and turned into something that feels seamless.
But seamless doesn’t mean neutral.
It means curated.
Whose voice does AI sound like?
A few weeks later, I tried something different. I asked the system to explain a social issue from a local perspective, something rooted in South Asian realities.
The response was… fine.
Technically correct. Well-structured. But something was off.
It felt distant. Flattened. Like it was translating an experience it didn’t fully understand.
That’s when another realization hit: AI doesn’t just give answers, it shapes how those answers sound. And more often than not, that “sound” leans toward a certain kind of voice: global, polished, and quietly Western.
Not because it’s trying to exclude anyone, but because of what it has been fed.
If most of the data comes from certain regions, languages, and perspectives, then those perspectives become the default. Everything else becomes a variation.
Over time, that default starts to feel like the norm.
The myth of effortless automation
There’s another illusion we’ve bought into: that AI is doing all this work on its own.
It’s not.
Behind every smooth interaction is a layer of human effort that rarely gets mentioned. People label data, review outputs, and filter harmful content. People who make the system “safe” and “usable.”
Most of them are invisible to us.
And many of them are working in conditions that don’t match the value they’re helping create.
So when we talk about automation replacing human labor, the reality is more complicated. The labor hasn’t disappeared, it’s just been moved, often to places where it’s easier to overlook.
When convenience becomes dependency
At some point, I stopped Googling things the way I used to.
Why scroll through pages of links when you can get a direct answer?
Why read five articles when one response summarizes everything?
It felt efficient. Smart, even.
But then I started noticing a pattern: I wasn’t just getting answers faster, I was relying on the system to decide which answers mattered.
That’s a subtle shift, but an important one.
Because when a single interface becomes your main source of information, it quietly takes on a new role. It’s no longer just helping you find knowledge. It’s filtering it.
And filtering is a form of power.
A quiet shift in control
Here’s the uncomfortable part.
The systems we’re using every day are controlled by a relatively small number of companies. They decide how these models are trained, what data is included, what safeguards are applied, and how outputs are shaped.
Most users never think about this.
We just see the result: something that works.
But underneath that convenience is a deeper question: Who gets to shape the way knowledge is produced and shared?
Because that’s what’s happening here.
AI isn’t just answering questions. It’s influencing how ideas are framed, which perspectives are highlighted, and what feels “normal” or “credible.”
And that influence is growing.
This isn’t just about technology
It would be easy to frame all of this as a tech issue. Better algorithms, better data, better regulation.
But it’s bigger than that.
This is about power.
It’s about whose knowledge gets amplified and whose gets sidelined. Whose voices become the baseline, and whose are treated as exceptions.
It’s about whether entire regions become dependent on systems they don’t control, built on data they didn’t fully consent to share.
If that sounds familiar, it should.
We’ve seen this pattern before, just in different forms.
So, where do we go from here?
I’m not saying we should stop using AI.
That’s not realistic, and honestly, not even desirable. These tools are useful. They save time. They open up possibilities that didn’t exist before.
But we need to be more aware of what we’re participating in.
We need to question the idea that these systems are neutral or inevitable. They’re not. They’re designed, shaped, and controlled, and that means they can also be challenged and changed.
More diverse data. More transparency. Better protection for the people doing the hidden labor. Greater investment in local AI systems that reflect local realities.
None of this is impossible.
But it requires attention.
The bigger picture
That simple email I started with? It doesn’t feel so simple anymore.
What looked like a helpful tool now feels like part of a much larger system, one that’s quietly reshaping how we write, think, and access knowledge.
And we’re all part of it.
Not just as users, but as contributors. Every post, every article, every digital trace adds to the pool that these systems learn from.
The question is: who benefits from that pool?
Because if we don’t ask that now, we might end up in a future where the most powerful systems in our lives are built from our collective voices
but no longer truly represent them.
